draft introduction on banning toys in happy meals (Ollie Maharaj-Booth)

Introduction

Toys should be banned from kid’s meals at fast food restaurants.  According to the Ministry of Health one in twelve children (aged 2 to 14) were obese (8.3%) in 2006/2007 now, the rate is at 10%  and a way to reduce this is by banning toys in kid’s meals.  One of the main causes for kids to desire happy meals is the joy of pulling out a toy and playing with it until their little minds find something else to entertain them.  Children don’t understand that the food they are eating is actually bad for them.  Yes it is the parents’ responsibility to make sure their kids eat healthily but, unfortunately there are parents who give into their child’s demands for a happy meal too easily.  It would be great if advertising to children in the food sector could be banned but, one baby step at a time.

  1. An interesting choice of topic which raises many questions. Like Should fast food giants like McDonalds and Burger King be obliged to help combat childhood obesity? Should there be more education in schools regarding healthy eating? Does the responsibility fall completely on the parents? Are the ethical standards within the advertising industry strong enough and clear enough?

  2. Agree with Liam's comment, there are so many questions and areas you could go with this topic. Might want to narrow it down to just a few and then give a brief overview of the others. Look forward to the end result.

  3. A serious issue that i haven't realized before. I think most parents haven't realized this either. It's not only the parents' responsibility but also the fast food company. However, another problem is if the toys banned from kid's meal how fast food attract kids. Here must be a good solution for both of the kids' health and the fast food company's profit. Cool post :)
