This is the basic structure/outline/plot I had developed for my piece
of Fan Fiction. But considering the word limit is 800 - 1000 words, I
have decided to cut down the story to just the events I have highlighted
in blue, which will allow more detail, dialogue etc, while staying within the word limit.
You can also find a piece I have written (on my own blog), which includes info on the background and back story which lead to the events within my fan fiction. You can find that post here.
My canon is THE WALKING DEAD.

My canon is THE WALKING DEAD.
Waking up
- Thoughts and dialogue on the farm, people who didn't make it out.
- Checking the surroundings
- Out on the open road they see a few walkers along the way here and there.
- Reach truck-stop petrol station at a 'T-junction'.
- Search for supplies, finding only bits and pieces. There is a dead prison guard in a storage room. He's in a faded pale-green uniform with black tie and appears to have shot himself.
- Another group turns up from the opposite direction, looking for fuel. They are obviously menacing.
- To avoid being seen, Rick, Daryl and Glen hide and decide not to reveal themselves, especially since they are still low on ammo.
- Rick, Daryl and Glen quarrel over whether to take them down with the remaining ammo they have, or risk letting them go, knowing there is a strong chance these bad guys will discover the rest of the group further down the highway.
- The Bad guys are about to leave, what will Rick choose to do? With lives at stake, what action will he take? ...You'll have to read the final piece to find out.
- Rick realizes it is too dangerous to stay on the road, because of bandits and hoards. (This reinforces the tagline for season 3 - 'FIGHT THE DEAD. FEAR THE LIVING').
- Their priority now is to find shelter that is safe, secure and secluded.
- With winter well and truly on the way, they are becoming more and more desperate.
- They discover in the church an old priest, Father Connors. He talks about seeing such unspeakable horrors in the small town in which he has spent most of his life, and appears to have lost his way and hope. Especially since he has been alone for the last nine months.
- Initially, Connors doesn't appear as a threat, just a broken man. A few of the group do not trust him, and so decide to keep a close eye on him for a while. The more time the group spend with Father Connors, the more some feel he is hiding something. Uneasiness begins to grow among the group.
- Meanwhile, two weeks pass while at the church, with no incident from walkers or other groups.
- Short trips are made to the outside world for ammo and also to hunt for food. During one trip Rick and Daryl notice an overturned bus in a clearing next to the highway. There are a few walkers near it who all wear the same clothing, a greyish blue jumpsuit. On the side and back of the bus says: WEST GEORGIA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.
- One day while playing, Rick's son Carl discovers a hidden door which leads to a basement of sorts underneath the church. He hears shuffling sounds and the slushing of dirty puddles. Carl gets scared and runs back upstairs, finds Rick and tells him what he thinks he saw and heard. As Rick and Daryl head for the basement, the door to it swings open and a hoard bursts through. It is the townspeople, who had been bitten, died and then turned.
- There are too many to take down, so the survivors make for an emergency exit. There appears to be no way to make it out of the church to the cars without getting bitten.
- They have no choice. The group manage to shoot a few walkers, which fortunately clears a path to the big front doors.
- The group run outside towards the cars, and Rick notices Father Connors is not with them.
- Rick stops and turns to see Connors some distance away, at the front doors of the church.
- The priest calls out to Rick telling him he will hold them off for as long as he can, to give the group as much time to escape. Rick tries to convince him to come with them, but Connors has had enough of the struggles of the new world, he says: '...I can't leave my flock' and with both hands, one on each door, the priest simultaneously pulls the heavy doors inward to shut and trap himself inside. Rick hears his screams from inside.
- Walkers outside the church are beginning to close in, Rick runs to the cars where the rest of the group are loading up and calling out to him. They all pile in and head off down the highway, tired and quiet.
- Rick glances in the rear view mirror, and sees Father Connors in the distance. He is in the middle of the road, alone. Hunched and gaunt-faced, he is staring straight at the car as it drives further and further away. The road eventually bends, and the priest is no longer in sight.
Well, I have never watched nor wanted to watch walking dead but seeing this sort of perspective makes me somewhat intrigued. I look forward to reading your fanfic.
ReplyDeleteAwesome detail, you have obviously put in a lot of effort into the outline. I haven't watched walking dead myself which shames me to say but because your outline sounds so damn good I think I will. Walking dead evening me thinks.
ReplyDeleteI love the walking dead so I did have a little panic when I saw that you were doing it because during our research stage I read some really terrible ones.. HOWEVER! I think your attention to detail is amazing! I found it quite cool that I could see this being an episode based on how well you have thought everything through and made sure that all characters have motive behind actions and aren't just doing things for the sake of it- just like the programme. Yay! I cant wait to read the final!
ReplyDeleteThe Walking Dead is such a great choice for your canon, however scary it may be! I've so far read the blue highlighted text and it has made me want to read more! From the few episodes of The Walking Dead I can see this works well with the shows story line! I don't know if it has convinced me to watch The Walking Dead though!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nice comments guys. On the surface, The Walking Dead is about zombies, but for me, when you dig a little deeper, it is really about people and what they are capable of, for both good and bad.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of a zombie apocalypse, and even just the threat that zombies present, are merely tools used to allow this kind of discussion. This is something I have tried to achieve with my Fan fiction.
